This group of plants are particularly important in a healthy wildlife pond. The majority of these plants have their leaves and roots in the water of the pond. However, some varieties also flower and have leaves that go above the pond. The key purpose of this group of plants is to provide oxygen for the whole pond which in turn prevents the pond from going stagnant and provides a mirco-climate for wildlife.
Ideally, oxygenating plants or submerged plants as they are commonly known, should cover approximately 50-60% of your pond area .The best oxygenating are those native to your country as these are most suited to the climate and wildlife.
However, it is important to keep plants under control as they have a tendency to take over the pond if not kept in check.
