hosepipes

The hose pipe was an important innovation for gardeners. Before hoses were available, water had to be carried. Early hose pipes were rubber - and very heavy. Most modern hoses are plastic or vinyl. The aim is to find a hose which is:

  • lightweight
  • strong
  • durable
  • kink-resistant

Hoses with a layered construction can have all these qualities. The smooth inner layer of the hose facilitates water flow. A vinyl-rubber layer gives the hose kink-resistance. A nylon-mesh layer of fabric gives the hose longitudinal strength and resists thorns. A ultra-violet light resistant outer layer protects the hose from sunlight damage. Five ply hoses are often the best. Larger diameter and higher-pressure hoses allow a given area to be watered in less time.

It is also worth buying high-quality hose fittings. Brass fittings are the most reliable but high-density plastic from a recognized manufacturer is also good.
